Sandtray therapy is a unique type of expressive therapy where you can tell your life stories without having to rely on verbalizing. This can be especially helpful for those who have experienced traumatic events. This type of therapy uses sand and miniatures as tools, or emotion words, to tell your story in a safe environment.

In sandtray therapy we make use of objects that can help us externalize what is going on inside. What this looks like is a small box of sand placed in front of you. At the very minimum, you can run your hands through it- touching and playing with sand can calm your nervous system and help you open up more. If you'd like, there are also miniature figurines that you can select and place in the sand to tell your story. It may sound odd at first, but I promise it is an amazing addition to therapy.

— Madilyn Morgan, Clinical Social Worker in Minneapolis, MN

I have utilized Sand Tray Therapy with children, teens and adults throughout my career. Our practice has a variety of sand trays available with various textures available to meet sensory needs. Sand Tray Therapy is effective for many types of client but can be especially helpful to utilize with folks who struggle with words or expression of their thoughts and feelings.

— Kassi Lightfoot, Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Sherman, TX

The Sandtray provides a safe, contained space to express and explore your inner world in a tangible way. The tray can be used with or without a prompt. Sometimes, the tray can help communicate or illustrate something words cannot. The scenes created with a tray can help clients experience emotional release, gain new realizations, and practice out fictitious change leading to real change in their life. I utilize sandtray therapy on its own as well as in conjunction with parts work and EMDR.

— Jasmine Hiland, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist in Nashville, TN

I have been trained in Sandtray therapy and use it frequently with teens and adults. This type of therapy focuses on connecting the client with the emotional/creative side of your brain and aids in working through many mental health issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, etc.

— Joseph Fincher, Student Therapist in Houston, TX

The Sandtray translates personal experiences into a concrete, three dimensional form. Through the use of figures and objects, whether they take humanistic, animalistic or some imaginative form, one can accurately represent aspects of their lives in such a clear, expressive and symbolic manner without using words which might be difficult or painful to share. A client also has the unique opportunity to physically and organically work out such emotions through the natural qualities of the sand.
